Our client in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal is seeking a Junior Environmental & Risk Officer to support SHER (Safety, Health, Environment & Risk) systems and drive key sustainability initiatives in the engineering and manufacturing environment.
About the Role
As a Junior Environmental & Risk Officer, you will play a hands-on role in ensuring the company complies with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other legal frameworks. You’ll also help develop environmental strategies, manage site risks, and monitor SHER performance across operations.

Key Responsibilities
- Report and investigate SHER-related incidents and implement corrective actions
- Ensure valid environmental permits and authorisations are in place
- Monitor compliance with SHER legislation and internal policies
- Collect SHER performance data and produce reports
- Maintain legal safety appointments and records
- Develop occupational health monitoring programmes
- Conduct site surveys, audits, and risk assessments
- Promote SHEQ awareness through training and communication plans
- Lead sustainability efforts: energy efficiency, waste reduction, carbon reporting
- Coordinate emergency response and pollution control plans
- Review SOPs to ensure ongoing compliance and efficiency
- Liaise with contractors, staff, and external agencies on SHER matters
- Provide audit findings and implement corrective measures
Minimum Requirements
- National Diploma or Degree in Environmental Management Sciences
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in environmental and risk compliance
- 3+ years in a similar Environmental & Risk Officer role
- Strong knowledge of ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001, OHSA, and NEMA
- Experience with flammable liquid storage (non-negotiable)
- SAMTRAC certification is advantageous
