About the Role
As a SHEQ Chief Safety Officer, you will oversee and implement the safety management systems at Samancor’s mining site. Your main goal will be to ensure full legal compliance and support a Zero Harm safety culture. You’ll use audit findings, incident learnings, and proactive risk management to keep employees and operations safe.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage SHEQ compliance through effective safety systems and toolkits
- Use the Information Management System (IMS) for safety investigations and reporting
- Monitor safety behavior and develop improvement strategies
- Conduct internal safety audits and close out findings
- Investigate incidents and participate in safety reviews (Level 2-4)
- Update the site’s risk register and implement risk controls
- Provide regular reports on SHEQ performance and statistics
- Support continuous improvement through Operational Excellence initiatives
Who Should Apply

Minimum Requirements
- Degree or National Diploma in a safety-related field
- Minimum 4 years of safety officer experience (5 years preferred)
- At least 2 years in a senior or chief safety role
- Knowledge of MHSA, hazardous chemicals, and environmental regulations
Preferred Qualifications
- Trade Test Certificate or Blasting Certificate
- Experience in both open cast and underground mining
Skills and Competencies
- Strong risk assessment and incident investigation skills
- Knowledge of ISO standards: 9001, 14001, 18001, 45001
- Training in first aid, firefighting, occupational hygiene, and environmental management
- Effective leadership and team management skills
- Ability to drive safety culture and manage change
