Introduction
Are you passionate about creating safer work environments and promoting a culture of zero harm? If you’re an experienced Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) professional looking to take the next step in your career, this opportunity at AFMS Group in Cape Town is worth exploring. The role of OHS Officer offers more than just routine inspections—it’s about leading change, driving compliance, and working directly with contractors and staff to build a health and safety-first culture. With a strong focus on the health and safety management system, this is a key role in ensuring operational excellence and environmental safety.
About the Role
As the OHS Officer, you’ll be responsible for overseeing and implementing all workplace health and safety protocols within an integrated facilities management environment. Your primary focus will be to communicate OHS values to both contractors and internal teams while ensuring full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, ISO standards, and internal policies. From coordinating emergency drills and conducting risk assessments to compiling compliance reports and safety files, this role requires hands-on involvement across a broad spectrum of responsibilities. You’ll also play a critical part in health and safety audits, monthly reporting, and interacting with clients and their agents.
Who Should Apply
This position is perfect for an OHS professional who thrives in dynamic environments and enjoys collaborating with multiple stakeholders. Ideal candidates will have experience working in the built environment and with contractors, and be confident managing compliance with legislation such as ISO 45001. If you’re proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of implementing improvements to a robust ehs management system, this could be your ideal role. If you’ve worked in construction safety or facilities management and are registered with bodies like SAIOSH or SACPCMP, you’re already a step ahead.
Skills & Requirements
To succeed in this role, you should have a solid foundation in occupational health and safety with the following minimum qualifications and experience:
- Grade 12 and at least 5 years of OHS experience in the built environment
- Registration with statutory bodies such as SAIOSH and/or SACPCMP
- Certificates in SAMTRAC, Risk Assessment, Incident Investigation, and Fall Protection Planning
- Knowledge of ISO 45001, ehs systems, and administrative compliance documentation
- Proven leadership and communication skills
- Experience with contractor compliance, health and safety training, toolbox talks, and maintaining safety files
Benefits
Working with AFMS Group means being part of a respected name in facilities management and health and safety services in South Africa. While salary is market-related and negotiable based on your experience, the bigger value lies in working in a team that prioritizes safety and compliance. You’ll gain exposure to iso safety management systems, work with experienced professionals, and receive the support necessary for professional development. The company culture encourages learning, growth, and promoting a safe and healthy workplace for everyone. It’s an opportunity to align yourself with a brand that’s trusted for delivering quality OHS solutions.
