Introduction

CapeNature is offering a permanent Field Ranger (Level 4) position at Limietberg Nature Reserve, located in the scenic Paarl region of the Western Cape. This is a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about nature conservation, biodiversity, and contributing to sustainable environmental management.

About the Role

The Field Ranger will be part of CapeNature’s Conservation Operations division, working under the Landscape Central business unit. This role plays a crucial part in maintaining protected areas, supporting eco-tourism, and enforcing environmental laws. The ranger will help protect biodiversity and manage both terrestrial and marine environments within the reserve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and restore ecosystems in the protected area
  • Control alien invasive species
  • Support heritage conservation tasks
  • Assist in biodiversity conservation and catchment management
  • Maintain infrastructure, vehicles, and equipment
  • Support eco-tourism and visitor services
  • Participate in compliance monitoring and law enforcement
  • Carry out environmental education and awareness programs
  • Respond to incidents like fires, floods, or marine strandings
  • Undertake administrative tasks and reporting

Skills & Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
  • At least 2 years’ experience in estuary, coastal, or marine environments
  • Valid driver’s license with minimum 3 years driving experience
  • Computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and GIS
  • Knowledge of ecological monitoring, law enforcement, and firefighting
  • Bilingual in two of the Western Cape’s official languages
  • Ability to swim and perform physically demanding field duties

Recommended Qualifications (Not Mandatory)

  • National Diploma in Nature Conservation or Marine Science
  • Peace Officer or EMI Grade 5 certification
  • 4×4 driving experience
  • Firefighting certificate and ICS 100 certification
