About the SHE Officer Role
As a SHE Officer, you’ll work under the guidance of the SHE Supervisor and play a key role in ensuring compliance with safety, health, environmental, and legal standards. This is a permanent position based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect firefighting and fire suppression equipment to ensure compliance with legislation
- Organize and take part in fire evacuation drills (PIMAD activities)
- Lead salvage and overhaul operations when necessary
- Liaise with staff, contractors, and transporters to enforce SHE procedures
- Investigate and report incidents and near misses
- Conduct monthly safety and environmental audits to maintain ISO compliance
- Develop safe work procedures and identify tasks requiring job observations
- Monitor environmental factors such as air quality and effluent levels
- Oversee monthly housekeeping audits and issue corrective action plans
- Coordinate SHE communication and distribute toolbox talk topics
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations through regular inspections
- Assist in developing Construction Environmental Management Plans (EMP’s)
- Manage hazardous chemical substances and maintain SDS database

Minimum Requirements
- Matric (Grade 12)
- Diploma in Safety Management
- SAMTRAC certification
- Minimum of 3 years in a similar role in the chemical or petro-chemical industry
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of fire suppression techniques and modern fire prevention equipment
- Understanding of emergency planning and occupancy classifications
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards
