About the Role
As Chief Safety Officer at Ivanplats, a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines, you will be responsible for overseeing all health and safety functions on-site. The role is critical in ensuring full compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act and upholding international standards like ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001. You’ll lead incident investigations, enforce safe work practices, and mentor the safety team across the company’s shaft sinking and civil projects.
This role is ideal for a candidate with strong knowledge of mining equipment, construction and engineering, and experience implementing occupational health and safety management systems within a mining or heavy industrial environment.

You’ll thrive in this role if you have previously worked on shaft sinking projects and possess 5 years in a senior-level safety role such as Chief Safety Officer. Skills & Requirements
- Tertiary qualification in Occupational Safety, Risk, or Engineering Management
- Project Management certification
- Incident investigation certification (ICAM/RCAT/SCAT)
- SAMTRAC or NEBOSH (preferred)
- Professional registration with SAIOSH or equivalent (preferred)
- 10 years’ mining safety experience, including shaft sinking
- Advanced knowledge of occupational health and safety ISO 45001 and operational risk management systems like C-MIRM
- Strong leadership and mentoring abilities
- Excellent report writing and communication skills
- Proficiency in quality and HSEQ auditing systems
- Valid driver’s license
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and monitor safety management systems in line with MHSA Sections 22 & 23
- Lead safety audits, inspections, and enforce compliance
- Facilitate incident investigations using root cause analysis methodologies
- Oversee emergency preparedness and response plans
- Manage safety reporting and compliance documentation
- Develop and train the safety team and ensure contractor safety performance
- Promote skills transfer and support women in mining initiatives
