The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is inviting applications for two PhD bursary positions in Agrometeorology or Plant Production. These are full-time, Department of Agriculture-funded bursaries based in Pretoria Central. About the PhD Programme

This programme offers a unique chance to be part of transformative agricultural research focused on climate-smart practices, agroecosystem improvement, and sustainable seed production. Candidates will work directly with rural communities to develop innovative solutions for enhancing local agri-food systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct community-based trials in various agroecological zones.
  • Develop baseline studies of local demographics and farming practices.
  • Analyse natural resource impact on agroecosystems.
  • Carry out research in both natural and controlled environments.
  • Design models to encourage seed production by smallholder farmers.
  • Collect and preserve germplasm from key local crops.
  • Perform genotyping and phenotyping of selected germplasm.
  • Gather and analyze primary and secondary data using both qualitative and quantitative tools.
  • Contribute to scientific papers, reports, and outreach materials.

Who Should Apply?

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (MSc) in one of the following fields:
