About the Role

The AFGRI Apprenticeship is a 3-year in-service training program designed to develop your technical skills while working under expert mentors. The first 6 months serve as a probation period to ensure the apprenticeship is the right fit for both the candidate and the company.

Once the probation is completed, you’ll enter into a training contract with AFGRI, gaining access to formal and informal learning opportunities. This includes both theoretical education and hands-on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Train to become a qualified Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Strong communication and administrative skills
  • Basic computer literacy
  • One of the following qualifications:
    • N2 Certificate with subjects including:
      • Mathematics
      • Engineering Science
      • Diesel Trade Theory
      • One of: Industrial Electronics, Engineering Drawing, or Motor Trade Theory
    • Or a Matric Certificate with the following subjects (minimum 40%):
      • Mathematics or Technical Mathematics
      • Physical or Technical Science
      • Engineering Graphics and Design

Note: If you do not meet the educational requirements, AFGRI may sponsor you to complete the necessary N2 subjects through Further Education and Training.

Training and Development

As part of the apprenticeship, you will receive the following training and development:

  • Practical training at AFGRI’s dedicated training institutes

  • Product-specific training at the John Deere Training Facility in Boksburg
  • Internal technical training with AFGRI specialists

Contract and Cost Information

  • 3-year apprenticeship contract (up to 4 years maximum)
  • All training is fully funded if passed
  • Failed training modules must be repeated at your own cost
  • If you withdraw early or fail to complete the “work-back” period, repayment costs will apply
