Job Description
Nando’s Feitoria is looking for a highly skilled Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Officer to join our team. The role requires an individual who will champion the implementation and enforcement of safety standards at our factory, ensuring compliance with all relevant international and national Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety (EOHSA) laws and regulations. You will be responsible for maintaining a safe operational environment, implementing SHE management systems, and ensuring our factory is aligned with industry and legal safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Legal Compliance
- Ensure adherence to local and national Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations and company safety policies.
- Maintain a register of SHE legal statutes, tracking changes and ensuring compliance.
- Participate in the SHE Committee, in line with the OHS Act.
- Lead SHE incident investigations and ensure that the proper safety measures are followed.
- Advise on SHE-related budgets and investments with Heads of Departments.
- Oversee the safety requirements for contractors working on-site and ensure they follow SHE guidelines.
- Ensure effective communication across departments on safety matters.
Inspections, Risk Assessments & Reports
- Conduct risk assessments on machinery, processes, and equipment.
- Track and report accident statistics in accordance with legal standards.
- Lead comprehensive SHE inspections every 6 months and submit detailed reports.
- Prepare key KPI and SHE statistics reports.
- Analyse incidents and accidents to provide corrective actions and improvements.
Training and Safety Education
- Facilitate safety training for staff, including first aid, hazardous material handling, and electrical safety.
- Ensure timely completion of internal and external safety audits.
- Develop and oversee a SHE Training Matrix and ensure ongoing safety education for all employees.
- Train specialised teams (e.g., fire safety, evacuation, and first aid teams).
Environmental Management
- Oversee the Environmental Management System for the factory.
- Lead the Sustainability Committee and monitor power, water usage, waste management, and recycling.
- Implement an environmental monitoring program and oversee external consultants.
- Develop environmental compliance reports as required by legislation.
- Partner with operational teams to manage environmental risks.
Food Security & Defense
- Lead the Food Defense team, conducting regular vulnerability assessments and developing defense plans.
- Provide Food Defense training to employees to ensure full compliance.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or B/Tech in Health & Safety, Environmental, or Risk Control qualification (NOSA qualification is advantageous).
- 3-4 years of experience in a manufacturing environment with a proven track record in Health, Safety, and Environmental management.
- At least 4 years of hands-on experience as a Safety Officer in manufacturing.
- 1-2 years of leadership experience, with knowledge of ISO 9000/1400 series being a plus.
- Prior experience in the FMCG or manufacturing industry (3-5 years).
Required Skills
- In-depth knowledge of local and international safety standards and legal requirements.
- Experience in conducting risk assessments, safety audits, and implementing safety policies.
- Strong communication and leadership skills to drive a culture of safety.
- Ability to manage and oversee environmental and food security compliance programs.
