Job Purpose
The Trainee Train Assistant will work closely with the Train Driver to safely and efficiently operate different types of trains and locomotives. This includes airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger trains, with the goal of ensuring that freight reaches its destination on time and in perfect condition.
Key Responsibilities
As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will be expected to:

Locomotive and Train Preparation
- Determine which locomotive to prepare based on the schedule.
- Ensure the locomotive is equipped with the necessary tools and safety equipment.
- Assist with starting up the locomotive and conducting brake tests.
- Clean and maintain the working area.

Shunting and Train Movement
- Perform shunting operations in sidings and along the route.
- Assist with coupling and uncoupling locomotives and wagons.
- Follow train working rules and ensure the safety of the train.

Train Journey Support
- Work alongside the Train Driver to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the train.
- Monitor signals, observe train performance, and assist in emergency situations.

Safety Compliance
- Adhere to all safety standards, regulations, and operational guidelines.
- Report any incidents or deviations along the route.
- Assist with administrative duties like completing the train journal after each shift.
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Additional Requirements
- Be at least 1.6 meters tall.
- Ability to carry heavy objects.
- Willing to undergo periodic medical surveillance, including vision, hearing, and physical fitness tests.
- The candidate must be over 21 years of age (SANS 3000, para 6.2.6.8).
Functional and Safety Training
- Successfully complete both theoretical and practical training to become certified as a Train Assistant.
- Periodic medical checks and safety behavioral risk assessments will be required throughout employment.
