Sasol is currently looking for a General Worker to support the Maintenance Team and the Directional Drilling Team in Sasolburg, South Africa. This role involves assisting with equipment maintenance, welding, and providing electrical or fitting assistance to ensure the sustainability and reliability of equipment.

Purpose of the Job

The General Worker will be involved in:

  • Welding mining equipment using various processes (including flux core welding).
  • Operating welding equipment safely.
  • Cutting materials and pre-heating with oxy-fuel gas cutting equipment while adhering to safety regulations.
  • Assisting with overhead crane operations and lifting equipment.
  • Completing checklists and job-specific tasks accurately.
  • Conducting visual inspections of the work environment to ensure safety standards are maintained.
  • Supporting daily morning meetings to discuss tasks and assignments.

This role also requires attention to cost-saving initiatives and will involve assisting the artisan with day-to-day tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Weld mining equipment using flux core and other welding techniques.
  • Operate welding equipment safely and follow gas safety procedures.
  • Assist with overhead crane and lifting equipment operations.
  • Complete tasks and checklists accurately and report any unsafe working conditions.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure compliance with SOPs and COPs.
  • Identify any abnormal conditions and report them promptly.
  • Participate in safety meetings and work towards achieving team goals.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • N3/NCV Level 4 or grade 12 (with a preference for math and science).
  • Driver’s License (minimum code 08).
  • Able to obtain a medical certificate of fitness.
  • First Aid Certificate (advantageous).

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • 12 months of welding experience.
  • Ability to safely use an angle grinder and cutting torch.
  • Knowledge of underground machinery such as Roof Bolters, Crushers, Shuttle Cars, and Feeders.

  • 12 months of plant experience (preferred).
  • Ability to operate MIG welding equipment (preferred).

Functional/Technical Skills:

  • Strong understanding of safety procedures and safety awareness.
  • Familiar with emergency preparedness, SOPs, COPs, and the Mine Health & Safety Act.
  • Ability to interpret written information and work instructions.
