What is the Military Skills Development System (MSDS)?
The MSDS is an initiative by the South African Navy to train and develop young South African citizens who are interested in military careers. It’s designed for individuals aged 18 to 22 and offers you the chance to serve in uniform on a two-year contract.
Year 1: You’ll receive military training and functional skills development in your chosen field.

Eligibility Requirements for the MSDS 2026 Intake
Before applying, make sure you meet the following requirements:
- South African Citizenship: You have to be a citizen of South Africa. Dual citizenship is not allowed.
- Age: You must be between 18 and 22 years old (completed Grade 12).
- Educational Requirements:
- Grade 12 with an Admission Point Score (APS) of 18 or higher (excluding Life Orientation).
- If you have a tertiary qualification or N6, you can apply if you are between 18 and 26 years old.
- Criminal Record: You should have no criminal record or pending cases.
- Medical Fitness: You must meet the medical fitness standards for the Navy.
- Visible Tattoos: No visible tattoos on your arms, legs, neck, or face.
Fields of Interest for the 2026 MSDS Intake
You will need to choose one of the following fields that align with your skills and interests:
Combat
- Age: 18 to 22 years.
- Requirements: Must have completed Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science at least at Level 4 (excluding Life Orientation).
Engineering and/or Technical
- Age: 18 to 22 years.
- Requirements: Must have completed Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science at least at Level 4 (excluding Life Orientation).
- Must have an N6 qualification or Trade Test in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
Divers
- Age: 18 to 22 years.
- Requirements: Must have completed Grade 12 with Mathematics at least at Level 3 (NO Math Literacy).
Support
- Age: 18 to 22 years.
- Requirements: Must have completed Grade 12.
