Position Overview: General Worker – Sasol Mining

Sasol is seeking a General Worker to join our Maintenance and Directional Drilling Teams. This role involves supporting equipment maintenance, welding tasks, fitting/electrical assistance, and ensuring the reliability and sustainability of machinery. The General Worker will work in various areas, including Sasol Coal Supply, Central Workshop, Directional Drilling, and Twistdraai Export Plant.

As part of the team, you will ensure adherence to safety protocols, assist with equipment maintenance, and contribute to a safe and efficient work environment while supporting the company's sustainability goals. You will assist in welding operations, use cutting equipment, operate overhead cranes, and conduct safety inspections, all while maintaining high-quality standards and contributing to team success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Welding & Equipment Maintenance:

    • Perform welding on mining equipment using flux-core and other welding techniques.
    • Safely operate welding equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
    • Cut materials and pre-heat using oxy-fuel gas cutting equipment, adhering to gas safety protocols.
  • Crane & Lifting Operations:

    • Assist with the operation of overhead cranes and lifting equipment according to safe procedures.
    • Ensure safe operation and maintenance of lifting equipment.
  • Safety & Risk Management:

    • Conduct visual inspections of the working environment to ensure safety standards are followed.
    • Report any unsafe conditions to supervisors.
    • Participate in hazard identification and task risk assessments.
    • Follow job-specific SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and COPs (Codes of Practice) to maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Teamwork & Productivity:

    • Collaborate effectively with team members to meet daily goals and deadlines.
    • Assist artisans with their daily tasks.
    • Identify cost-saving opportunities and contribute to improving team efficiency.
  • Documentation & Reporting:

    • Complete job-specific tasks and checklists accurately.
    • Participate in daily morning meetings to discuss work assignments and progress.
    • Report any abnormal conditions promptly.

Job Requirements:

  • Education & Qualifications:

    • Grade 12, N3, NCV Level 4, or equivalent (Mathematics & Science – advantageous).
    • Driver’s License (minimum code 08).
    • Ability to obtain a Medical Certificate of Fitness.
    • First Aid Certificate (desired but not mandatory).
  • Experience & Skills:

    • Minimum 12 months of welding experience.
    • Ability to safely use an angle grinder and cutting torch.
    • Knowledge of underground machinery such as Shuttle Cars, Roof Bolters, Crushers, and Feeder Breakers.
    • 12 months of plant experience (desired but not mandatory).
    • Experience with MIG welding equipment (desired but not mandatory).
  • Technical & Functional Knowledge:

    • Knowledge of safety procedures and emergency preparedness.
    • Familiarity with SOPs, COPs, and Mine Health & Safety Acts.
    • Ability to interpret written work instructions and technical information.
